Description
Before the Civil War, a war raged on the border between Missouri and the Kansas territory that many believe ignited the Civil War itself. The guerrilla war was fought over whether Kansas would be a slave or free state. It was extremely personal, with neighbors informing on neighbors; revenge was a driving force. Books in this list are featured in Johnson County LIbrary's "Blood & Ashes: How Should We Remember the Border War?" discussion guide written by Jennifer Wilding. You can download a copy for free here: www.jocolibrary.org/borderwar. On this page, you'll also find historian videos and other resources on the Border and Civil War.
