First in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series.

Annotation:Supremely confident middle school student Nate Wright manages make getting detention from every one of his teachers in the same day seem like an achievement. First in a series.

Annotation:When their parents' seedy old motel burns down on the same night they are visited by a strange man covered in skeleton tattoos, Cyrus, Antigone, and their brother Daniel are introduced to an ancient secret society, and discover that they have an important role in keeping it alive. First in a series. Also consider Wilson's 100 Cupboards series.

Annotation:When twelve-year-old Steve Brixton, a fan of Bailey Brothers detective novels, is mistaken for a real detective, he must elude librarians, police, and the mysterious Mr. E as he seeks a missing quilt containing coded information. First in the Brixton Brothers series.

Annotation:A number of excellent mystery series, including: The Absent Author (#1, The A to Z Mysteries) - Dink Duncan and his two friends investigate the apparent kidnapping of famous mystery author Wallis Wallace.

Annotation:When twelve-year-old Becker Drane is recruited by The Seems, a parallel universe that runs everything in The World, he must fix a disastrous glitch in the Department of Sleep that threatens everyone's ability to ever fall asleep again. First in The Seems series.

Annotation:On his first day at Brooklyn's P.S. 858, fifth-grader Michael K. is teamed with two very strange students, and while he gradually comes to believe they are aliens who need his help, he has trouble convincing anyone else of the truth. First in a series. Scieszka has many other excellent titles and series, too.
