I stumbled across this thought-provoking middle grade novel, finished it in a day and talked to my family. "Maybe He Just Likes You" is an important novel that provides insight into the stress young girls experience with body changes during puberty.
When 7th grader, Mila attracts unwanted attention from the boys in their group, her distress is minimized by both the school administrators and her friends as overly sensitive and an overreaction to "flattering" attention. The harassment she suffers is anything but flattering and empowering. It reveals the unwelcome teasing suffered by many middle grade students, not just those who are developmentally advanced. This novel triggered parental soul searching and remorse as well as the desire to advocate for pre teen and teen women.
Parent's of any middle grade student would do well to hand this to any family member in this age group.I stumbled across this thought-provoking middle grade novel, finished it in a day and talked to my family. There's a lot in this novel set in the early 1960's South. Civil Rights, the Polio epidemic, and coming of age all deeply weigh on 14 year old Diana, raised by her quadriplegic mother Paige and strong willed caregiver Peacie. Diana is realistically portrayed as a bratty, yet loyal and overwhelmed teenager. Peacie is a wonderful, complex character as well, devoted to the women yet strong and independent. I had more trouble with Paige. Her disciplinary method of biting Diana until she bled would definitely qualify as child abuse today, even though it was explained at the end.
"We Are All Welcome Here" is not my favorite Elizabeth Berg novel but once again, she is spot on in her portrayal of young women and complex characters. There's a lot in this novel set in the early 1960's South. Chanel MIller's memoir about her experience as a victim should be referenced in the required college admittance anti sexual assault modules. It reinforces the point that the inability to give consent does not constitute consent.

I unexpectedly fell in love with this book. I'm not sure if it's because it's reminiscent of of Pat Conroy, one of my favorite authors, without the extra creepy characters or the beach theme in the midst of a wintry spring but once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down.I unexpectedly fell in love with this book. This rating would be higher had I NOT watched (and loved) the Netflix series. This is one of those rare instances where the screen adaptation is vastly superior to the book. Unfortunately, this iconic horror novel suffers in comparison. The book is old school horror, dark and foreboding vs. gory and violent. The suspense builds nicely and it's mostly a psychological thriller.

Louna is cynical about love, even though she helps out with her mom's wedding planning business. It's her last summer before leaving for college and she gets stuck working with "super annoying" (but good looking) Ambrose. Magic or disaster?
