"Between life and death, dreaming and waking, at the train stop beyond the end of the world is the city of Palimpsest. To get there is a miracle, a mystery, a gift, and a curse -- a voyage permitted only to those who've always believed there's another world than the one that meets the eye. Those fated to make the passage are marked forever by a map of that wondrous city tattooed on their flesh after a single orgasmic night." To this erotic and fantastic kingdom come Oleg, a New York locksmith; a beekeper, November; Ludovico, a binder of rare books; and a Japanese woman named Sei, each of whom has lost something important in their lives. -- Publisher info.

I think the author was trying for surrealism. This book is about some random people in the "real" world who wake up with mysterious, ugly tattoos and a desire to get back to a dream city filled with cruel, pompous people who don't want them there. The most acclaimed person in this city makes rats, roaches, and mosquitoes and started a war because she was "lonely" which resulted in thousands of soldiers being mutilated and given animal limbs.
The tattooed people can only return briefly to this city by having unpleasant, joyless sex with other tattoo victims. The city has mystical trains, rivers made of old coats, and bizarre, deformed children. In the entire eleven-hour book, there is only one minor character who ever displays any kindness. All the rest are selfish, angry, and loveless. I listened to this book on a long drive, and desperately wished I had another Playaway to plug in. I have read thousands of books in my life, and I can't remember ever being this angry at an author for writing one. It is depressingly pointless and way, way too long. Do yourself a favour and, get a different book.

Very erotic, very imaginative, tough to follow, probably need to read it more than once to get a better grasp of the plots of all the characters.
I would like to join a discussion group, read it again and talk about it with others that liked it.
