"Set in Fo Shan, China during the Sino-Japanese War, Ip Man vividly brings to life the brutality of the infamous Japanese occupation, where once proud men are forced to fight [to the] death for a precious bag of rice. Defined by courage and humility, Ip Man, whose fighting skills are revered all over China, rises to the fore front. Upon refusing to teach his martial arts to the invading Japanese soldiers, he is forced to fight for the honor of his country in a series of battles that will culminate in a kill-or-be-killed showdown with Japan's greatest fighter"--Container.

Great action film about a martial arts artist in the WWII era. The action is fantastic as is the story. However, the best thing about the movie is the gorgeous scenery of Japan. The film is beautifully shot and is wonderful to look at. 9/10

Ip Man, sometimes known as Yip Man, was a Chinese martial artist who practiced the form known as Wing Chun, which he taught to many students, including Bruce Lee. He has been the subject of quite a few films, many with similar titles. This one, from 2008, focuses on the years under Japanese occupation. Some commentators on other sites accused the film of being propaganda and demonizing the Japanese, which is inaccurate. They are an occupying force and I think while most people have a sense of how cruel the Nazis were, they are unclear about the atrocities the Japanese army committed. Read about Nanking if you don't know. Anyway, this film is not as interesting as history as it is a well-made, stylish martial arts film, with a strong central performance by Donnie Yen as Ip Man, and some great fight scenes. It was followed by two sequels. Wong-Kar Wai's artier, more lyrical "The Grandmaster" is also about Ip Man. Also see "Once Upon a Time In China," "Fist of Fury," "Fist of Legend," and "Hero."

Great Kung Fu film. Story follows our hero, Master Ip, in the years B4 WWII while he upholds truth, justice & the Chinese way. Then into WWII Japanese occupation and the the attendant rigors under their jack-boots. Master Ip is the baddest man in town but only breaks-out the whip-ass when absolutely necessary. When he dose though, you best be somewhere else!

This was a great movie that I watched numerous times with my husband. Its based on the Wing Chun martial arts style, created by a woman and used by both males and females today. Me and my husband both do a different style of martial arts now, but we began this journey by watching this movie and firstly , falling in love with martial arts through wing chun. I still use it! This movie portrays Ip Man as a humble martial arts practicioner who loved his family very much and did the best that he could to stand up against injustices during the Japanese invasion. Brilliant movie.

P.S. For English subtitles, you have to check the movie settings before pressing "Play movie" on the screen. Hope that helps.

Wonderful movie with an intiguing story, that is well-written and very-well directed... Pretty good cast! The movie was based on the real Ip Man, by the way.. He was a Grandmaster of Kung Fu.. He had an unique way of teaching it.. Do see the Extra info. It's both in Chinese and English..I highly recommend the movie..

Ip Man is the story of one of China's greatest martial arts master and teacher. In this film, during the Japanese invasion of China, Ip Man must confront both Chinese black marketeers and Japanese troops. His inspiration kept up the spirits of the Chinese during the long eight year cruel war with the Japanese. Watch how the film turns nearly black and white at times and see if you can determine what the director is symbolizing with this method of filming.

Miura: [after witnessing Ip Man single-handedly defeat ten Japanese fighters at once] What's your name?

Ip Man: I'm just a Chinese man.
