The Way of Kings is the longest book I've ever labored to get through that I actually wanted to finish. I gave up on Mistborn early on. I tossed aside Wheel of Time after only a few hundred pages. All you Stormlight fans kept saying hang in there, that it picks up near the end once all the worldbuilding is in place. So I soldiered on. What is it with long fantasy epics?

As writers go, I respect Brandon Sanderson. His passion is genuine, and he has a healthy, productive work ethic that one rarely sees. It's something I aspire to in my not-a-novelist career. That I struggle to connect with his characters is a problem of my own taste. Plus, I have a love/hate relationship with fantasy more than any other genre. I want to embrace the other-worldly escapism of it all, but its characters tend to lack much in the way of believable humanity. Too often they are stilted and distant. Even their flaws don't feel real.

Without spoiling any of the specifics of the ending I mention above, I thought the book did finally deliver a climax worthy of the thousand pages leading up to it. Dalinar's predicament is especially interesting, and something I never would have guessed.

So, do I continue on? I honestly don't know. Keep in mind this is book one of a ten book series. I feel like I just finished a marathon I hadn't properly trained for.
