Special Exits chronicles the decline of Lara (Farmer'sstand-in)'s elderly parents (Lars and Rachel)'s health. Set insouthern Los Angeles (which makes for a terrifying sequence as blind Rachel andailing Lars are trapped in their home without power during the 1992 Rodney Kingriots), backgrounds and props are lovingly detailed: these objects serve asmemory triggers for Lars and Rachel, even as they eventually overwhelm them andtheir home, which the couple is loathe to leave. Rendered in thin, confident penlines, Special Exits is laid out in an eight-panel grid, which creates aleisurely storytelling pace that not only helps to convey the slow, inexorabledecline in Lars' and Rachel's health, but perfectly captures thetimbre of the exchanges between a long-married couple: the affectionatebickering; their gallows humor; their querulousness as their bodies break down.Though Lars and Rachel are the protagonists of Special Exits, Farmer makes hervoice known through creative visual metaphors and in her indictment of thecareless treatment of the elderly in nursing homes.

This is the moving graphic memoir of the author Joyce Farmer's heroic attempts to care for her sick elderly parents during the last few years of their lives. The three central characters in the book are very well done and the art is interesting and engaging. I would advise you not to grow old, but I understand that the alternative isn't very popular.

This book is brilliant. Joyce Farmer tells the heartbreaking story of the last years of her parents' lives and brings new meaning to "a picture's worth a thousand words". as a lot of the story in this graphic memoir is told in the detailed drawings.

Special Exits chronicles the final four years in the lives of Lars and Rachel, an elderly couple whiling away their remaining time in their small South Los Angeles home.

Clear-eyed and compassionate, profoundly moving yet unsentimental, Special Exits is one of the first graphic memoirs to tackle head-on the subject of one's parent's decline and death. ...
