Although the main character in this book is a retired detective, this book is only a mystery in passing. It really is a look into the mind of the detective, Sunderson, and his thoughts on many topics - a rumination. He is chasing a cult leader from the upper peninsula of Michigan to Southwest AZ, but the book is more about his relationships with his family and friends, including his ex-wife, and his delight in nature. I liked the book and enjoyed his thoughts, but the extreme male point of view became difficult for me to empathize with. Also there were places in the novel where a comma would have helped the understanding of the sentence. I do recommend this book, but am not sure I would read the recently published second novel in the series. However, I will probably read one of his earlier books.
