When 11 year old Lucy Bertel learns that her family is moving from Savannah, Georgia, to New York City, she is not happy, no matter how "great" her parents' new jobs are. Lucy is fascinated by handwriting and what she believes that it reveals about a person. Nicky, his sister and father live in the apartment above Lucy's family. Nicky is always in trouble with his father and doesn't get outside much. In fact, he spent the summer talking to a pigeon who sat on the window ledge of his Grandmother Zelda's apartment. Grandma Zelda disappears, leaving a note that the pigeon gives to Lucy. Lucy dislikes Nicky and holds on to the note. Will this unlikely trio join forces and discover what happened to Grandma Zelda?
