A sweeping look at nearly five decades of global history, a crystallization of a massive, three-year-long effort helmed by award-winning documentarian Jeremy Isaacs (The World at War). Isaacs's team shot more than 1,000 hours of original footage and gathered archival footage from all over the world to include historically important, and often emotionally stunning, images, many never before seen by an international audience.

24 episodes, each 46 minutes, full of information. Comments by Nixon, Ford, Carter, Gorbachev et al. Made in 1998 before current Russophobia.
--- FDR's demand for unconditional German surrender prolonged the war, cost millions of lives, and let Stalin take over Eastern Europe.
--- We leveled Pyongyang and killed 1,000,000 North Korean civilians.
--- Mao's Great Leap Forward starved 30,000,000 to death, but Western intellectuals admired him.
--- We denounced Latin American land-reforms that threatened our resource-looting. East Europeans were better off than peasants living under the dictators we supported.
--- Asserting US control of the Americas, our UN ambassador, Lodge, yelled at the Soviet representative,"Stay out of this hemisphere!" in a debate about our violent overthrow of the democratically-elected government of Guatemala on behalf of resource-looting United Fruit Co, in which Lodge and other US leaders held stock.
--- We denounced Communist subversion while we ourselves subverted vulnerable democratic socialist governments (eg Iran, Guatemala, Chile).
--- JFK pledged we would not invade Cuba. Three days later came the Bay of Pigs invasion, which we organized and controlled. Six US bombers with false markings took part.
--- Claiming full rights in other nations' coastal waters, we completely blockaded Cuba. We said Cuban missiles were offensive, but ours were defensive.
--- The film says JFK would not leave Vietnam; but he WAS withdrawing men, which led to his removal.
--- US soldiers had VietCong kill-quotas; dead peasants were deemed VC per se.
--- McNamara's praise for MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) is chilling. (To beat Hitler, who was not a threat to us, we saved Stalin, who clearly was, and we created weapons that can end civilization. We truly WERE mad.) In 1963, the British anti-nuke film, THE WAR GAME, was banned. Four US nukes were accidentally dropped over Spain, but did not explode.
--- US spyplanes flew across the USSR and ringed its borders, sometimes disguised as airliners. We parachuted spies into the country, and tunneled under East Berlin to tap communication lines.
--- In 1967 blitzkrieg, Israel bombed a US ship, killing 34 sailors and wounding 171. Zionists rejected détente; they wanted to make the USSR let Jews go to Israel.
--- The CIA was likely complicit in the deaths of several foreign leaders (Lumumba, Trujillo, Hammarskjold, Allende, Archbishop Romero, Roldos, Torrijos), and did all it could to murder Castro. John Kennedy was another victim.
--- Our chief goal had been to curb the spread of Communism without nuclear war. But grandstanding "human rights" advocates assailed peaceful Soviet leaders. (We had trampled human rights for centuries, eg killing 2,000,000 Vietnamese. When the Khmer Rouge killed 2,000,000 Cambodians, we did nothing. "Human rights" would become but another US excuse to bomb and devastate, eg in Libya.)
--- The Soviets sought to settle wars in Ethiopia and Angola. We refused: it would legitimize the Soviet presence in Africa. The Soviet-backed sides then won both conflicts. Our meddling led to the subsequent chaos in Somalia. CIA-backed mercenaries tortured and killed Angolan civilians.
--- Afghan socialists granted rights to women, causing a rebellion. The reformers sought Soviet aid. We gave the rebels Stinger missiles, sponsored bin Laden, and worked with Pakistani drug dealers. We rejected a compromise solution, preferring to prolong the war and exhaust the Soviets, however much chaos and death resulted. Our reward was 9/11. Yet when WE invaded Afghanistan, the Russians supported us.
--- Bush Sr assured Soviet leaders that NATO would not expand east of Germany. But when the USSR dissolved, NATO did move east, absorbing the Warsaw Pact countries, and even some former Soviet republics.
