Aisling of Brudiar has spent her whole life with the shadow of evil slowly creeping over her land. That changes when she is sent to find a master swordsman to save her country. If she fails, her life will be forfeited. She does not expect that the swordsman to be a wounded elven prince masquerading as a soldier. I read the second in the series before I read this, and had I not, I don't think I would have continued. The heroine is a Victim. Utterly dependent on others and with some flexible morality but somewhat self-righteous and pedantic. She keeps stating "I don't need your aid" like that negates her complete incompetence and reliance on others. In real life, she would've been raped and killed in 5 minutes. But since this is fiction, it would've been nice to have heroine that wasn't so gormless.

So disappointed that this book pulls the typical fantasy/scifi ending, which is THERE IS NO ENDING! Publisher trick to lure us on to sequels ends the book, not at a conclusion but the end of a chapter. I suggest you wait for the next book and hope it isn't just #2 of a trilogy.

Several books in this series. Each book seems to focus on a different character. Can't wait to read them all and see how the back-stories fill in.
