Shows just how easy it would have been to lose the revolutionary war. That the U.S. did not is partly attributable to the forbearance of General Howe and his brother Admiral Howe, who still would have like to achieve reconcilation with the colonies. Ellis perfectly emphasizes how Washington was left to direct a war for a country that wasn't even sure yet what it meant to be a country.
