As other reviewers have pointed out, Frances is a highly flawed character. Having been a young woman in the Victorian age, as well as her father's cherished and protected daughter, it made sense to me that Frances would have held tightly to her sense of entitlement and would have been naive and gullible enough to have made all the poor judgments she makes.

This book is beautifully written, creating clear pictures of the alternating squalor, austere beauty and brutality of colonial South Africa. In this place, smallpox might threaten hundreds of lives, an innocent human (or animal) might serve as a foil for a ruthless diamond smuggler and families' years of hard work might be wiped out in a season for lack of rain.

There were a few missteps here (I'm certain no one used the phrase "I don't do disapproval" in this era), but overall, this story is captivating and well told.

A run-of-the-mill period romance, but more interesting because of its setting in South Africa. The heroine grows and develops as a person, which is always nice. The audiobook was well narrated. An excellent book as an accompaniment to doing crafts or driving; it doesn't require too much concentration.

Somewhat interesting. At times a bit over-the-top saga & a bit over-long about one woman, her love life, etc. Pleasant reader voice without dramatics.
