Old-School Comfort Food; the Way I Learned to Cook --- by Alex Guarnascxhelli. I love cookbooks, especially those that go beyond being just a collection of recipes. Cookbooks that give provenance to the foods they tell you how to prepare. These are the ones that have aroma, the books you can taste. The comfort foods Guarnaschelli writes about are those of her childhood, her youth, the ones her mother made, and then later made with her. A wonderful collection of dishes: leeks vinaigrette; baked potato salad; breaded chicken with mustard and dry sherry and, the most intriguing, mashed potatoes “chantilly”. I tagged those recipes I wanted to try and soon had a forest of hot pink stick-em notes sprouting from the pages of the book: obviously a book I had to adopt.

Her parents, a French cooking school, and restaurant apprenticeships all contributed to the chef she is today. This book shares favorite recipes, funny (and embarrassing) stories about her experiences, and the tools and ingredients she likes to use in the kitchen. Food photos as well as saved documents add interest to the text.
