They have left Illinois trailing scandal and disappointment in their wake, fallout from her husband's severe sleep disorder. For months, their three-year-old son has refused to speak a word.
On a whim, Georgia takes a job as an errand runner for a reclusive artist and is surprised at how her life changes dramatically. But soon the family's challenges return, more complicated than before. Late that summer, as a hurricane bears down on South Florida, Georgia must face the fact that her decisions have put her only child in grave danger.

Sea Creatures is a mesmerizing exploration of the high stakes of marriage and parenthood.

This book is nuanced and yet there are chapters where you are just holding your breath until you find out what happened. I wish the author would write many more.

Susanna Daniel has woven a tale of family tragedy on the coasts of Florida where living on the water is as natural as the sea creatures who live in it... until nature reminds us who's boss. Daniel revisits the community of her first novel, Stiltsville, where the houses are built on pilings on the water. Georgia returns to the town where she was born with her husband, Graham, and her son, Charlie from their mid-west cottage in Illinois. Frankie is three-years-old and has stopped speaking. Georgia suffers from chronic insomnia, and Graham is a sleepwalker... the serious kind where it has come to cuffing him to the bed so he doesn't get himself, or those around him, in some kind of trouble.

This small family is surrounded by a large cast of colorful characters, including Charlie, a hermit who lives in Stiltsville for whom Georgia starts to work, organizing his detailed and beautiful drawings of various sea creatures that capture Frankie's imagination and inspires him to start speaking again, all while Graham is off working on a ship in Hurricane Alley, studying weather patterns. It all comes to a head when personal and natural disasters coincide sending Georgia, Graham and Frankie's lives spinning into upheaval. Daniel mixes emotional, natural and domestic challenges into a compelling tale about the heart and the home.
