A beautifully penned and vividly imagined retelling of Beauty and the Beast that weaves together Greek myths, a crumbling castle, and a very, very alluring Beast named Ignifex.

Cruel Beauty is an amazing retelling of Beauty and the Beast with a bit of a darker spin on it. The story is about Nyx Triskelion who is given to the demon Lord, known as the Gentle Lord to be his wife after her father had made a bargain with him. Nyx is stubborn but very determined and the Gentle Lord is not quite what everyone makes him out to be. I enjoyed reading this book and I loved the setting in which it took place. I also really liked that the characters had flaws and they weren't immediately fixed by magic. I really enjoyed how the characters interacted with each other and how they're relationship changed throughout the story. There were a couple of points where I was a little bit lost but I still really enjoyed reading it and glad I was able to be transported into their mystical world. It also has a beautiful cover which also drew my eyes to the book. I would give this story 4.5 stars as I really enjoyed it but was slightly lost for certain moments. - Kailey, 14, SAPL Read It & Review Contributor

Unusual adult fairy tale which becomes more and more convoluted ie quite a challenge to follow by the end. Nevertheless, it' s a worthwhile read, especially for its novelty.

This book had so much potential to be so much more, so it left me a little disappointed in the end. I can’t say I really understood where the author meant to go with the ending; it felt like she was trying really hard to give the characters a happy ending but didn’t really know how to do it. This book reminded me a LOT of “Echo North” by Joanna Ruth Meyer. Save yourself a read on this one, and read Meyer’s tale instead, I promise you won’t regret it.

Cruel Beauty is an interesting retelling of the tale of Beauty and the Beast. However, I had a hard time getting into the story. The writing is beautiful and entertaining, but the character of Nyx grated, and I never really got to experience the story through her. She just seemed so disagreeable, though considering what she had been raised for, that might have been the author's purpose.

I wouldn't mind reading more from Rosamund Hodge, though I would hope the character would be more compatible with the reader.

If you enjoy retellings of classic stories, this is a fun one to engage in, if you can get past Nyx's character. Both Shade and Ignifex are fascinating to read about, and the secret between them really propels the story forward. I suggest this for fantasy lovers as well, as the world that's built is incredibly realistic, despite the fantastic elements.

This book was really interesting to me, with a twist that was good (if not slightly predictable). I really liked that the main characters were flawed and that these flaws stuck with them throughout the book instead of having magical personality shifts. I admired the main character and how she interacted with each obstacle in her way, even though the things she dealt with emotionally weren't things I had ever had to deal with.
I really liked the protagonist. My first impression of him wasn't very good but he grew on me fast which wasn't something I expected.
I did get lost at times with some of the details, but overall it was a really good book.

Even though it's a Beauty and the Beast retelling, I felt like the idea of beauty seen even in the ugly can overcome anything if you're willing to let that beauty take over.

loved this book. I totally ship them, I liked how it was based off of beauty and the beast, but with a dark twist to it.

The cover of this book is gorgeous, which I guess contributes somewhat to the book's amazingness. This is not your average Beauty and The Beast spin, as it involves a lot more darkness than light. "Beauty" resents being the sister, chosen by her father due to a despicable trade, to be married off to the "Beast". That's basically the story line, except beauty has a younger sister, and their mother died from this trade. It is her duty to now go "kill" her husband, which I found rather interesting. She is a strong, fearless woman with only her mindset and assets, which makes her conversations with him rather direct. Definitely a good read before the new movie! 3.5/5 stars

17-year-old Nyx Triskelion is betrothed to the demon lord who rules her country. She has been trained all her life to wed him and then kill him. She must now move to the castle and fulfill her destiny to be his wife. This is a retelling of “Beauty and the Beast” but much darker. I love how the demon lord is not who you expect him to be. Ingnifex, also known as the demon lord is not who he seems to be. He is the lord of bargains and people say he’s a bad guy but when Nyx gets to know him better, she realizes that he’s different from what the people say he is. I really enjoyed reading this book. I love how Ingnifex is the funny and laid back person and how Nyx is stubborn and cold towards him. I recommend this to anyone who likes “Beauty and the Beast’ and would love to read a dark retelling of the story. 5/5 stars
