This is an absolutely gorgeous version of an ABC book. I am not into steampunk and yet I thoroughly enjoyed this book where A is for Anvil and B is for Bolt. I like books that offer a different set of vocabulary words to children. These words are not ones you usually find in children's books. On top of that, the illustrations are so rich, vibrant, detailed and colorful.

I think there is a little something for everyone in this book. It is advertised for ages 3-7 and I think that is perfect. For the older children in this range, this book is a good early reader.

Aside from the topic choice, this is just your typical ABC book. Each letter gets a page with one short sentence that uses a word starting with the featured letter. Supposedly these words reflect on the Steampunk genre, yet they have more to do with general construction than this fandom. Two mice work hard to build the various things represented by the words and by the time they get to Z, they complete their project. Although each element is not visible, they were clearly incorporated. This one clever aspect goes a long way to redeem this otherwise straightforward alphabet book. While the words have little to do with Steampunk, the visual aspect does a fair job with its rich colours, gears, and the Victorian clothes the mice wear. Children will surely pick up a book with such a interesting cover and title, yet they may find it a difficult read due to all the uncommon words.
