Four is a story collection taking place two years before Divergent takes place. In this collection, we get to see even before Beatrice Prior made her decision, and instead see the Abnegation’s faction leader’s son. I loved reading this short addition to the Divergent series. The scenes you get to read in this book are all interesting since it's being told from Tobias’s perspective instead of Tris. There is some repetition that can feel unnecessary since it is already told from Tris’s point of view however there were some scenes that were interesting to see from Tobias. It was nice to relive the scenes again and hear more from Tobias since he is perceived as mysterious in the Divergent series. I would recommend the Divergent series readers to pick this book up since it is nice to reread the same scenes being told from a different perspective. Alongside this, a plus is that there are some new extra scenes included.

Tobias Eden is what every person needs to feel like they belong. Well, belong to more than one thing.

This is such a great series, and I was so happy that I was able to read the last installment that takes the very first book into Four’s/Tobias’ perspective! Veronica Roth is a great author, and she was able to go into his head to see his emotions and feelings towards other people. As usual, the message in this series is about corruption, childhood trauma, and violence, which I think was written very well for us to understand this character’s perspective. I also liked the contrast between him and his father, as it gave his future choices in the other books more meaning. This was nice for me as I got many flashbacks from the first book, and I recommend Four for anyone who has already read the Divergent trilogy or the movies, and for people ages 12-18! It would be nice if there were stand-alone books for other characters in this series like Christina or Caleb! @Notorious_Critic23 of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

Four tells the story of Tobias/Four's life (with him narrating) prior to Divergent and also intercedes some of the scenes in Divergent as well. I personally loved this book - it explained why Four was always a bit more secretive about himself in the beginning of Divergent, and it was interesting to see how the Dauntless faction was run before Tris arrived. Divergent explains the story line, so I suggest you read this book after reading Divergent first, if not the whole series. If you enjoyed the main series, I highly recommend reading this book! 5/5 stars

This is the story of Tobias Eaton. It starts when he was still living in Abnegation and goes through his story of being an initiate after choosing Dauntless. I liked learning little things about his story from before he met Tris but I thought the story would be more about their relationship from his point of view. A very small portion of the story was about that.

It was really interesting to be able to look at the scenes of Divergent (the first book) from Tobias's point of view. Great read.

I love the short stories by four. He did a great job telling his side of the story in Divergent.

This is a great series! I love these books. My only negative comment is that some things in this book do not match up with the things that happened in "Divergent". I do however highly recommend this book. I have found that it was much more enjoyable to read after I've read the other three books. And I think that it was very helpful in knowing Four's side of things better and how he views the people around him.

I love this series! Since I am always confused about which book comes next and stuff here's a guide: #1 Divergent #2 Insurgent #3 Allegiant. And Four is Tobias's point of view and takes place in the past but it also overlaps a few chapters into Divergent (it contains spoilers too)

It was amazing to see Four's side of things because we didnt really know what he was thinking or how he felt until Alleigent. It was a nice change of perspective and very good on Veronica Roth's part

This book explains the life story of Tobias Eaton (From Divergent) in first person perspective. It explains why he first chose Dauntless and how well he managed during and after initiation-now called Four, he considers his transfer from Abnegation to Dauntless a fresh beginning, a new life. This book includes certain scenes from Divergent with Beatrice Prior.

whitefalcon17 Sep 03, 2014

Two years before Beatrice Prior made her choice, the sixteen-year-old son of Abnegation’s faction leader did the same. Tobias’s transfer to Dauntless is a chance to begin again. Here, he will not be called the name his parents gave him. Here, he will not let fear turn him into a cowering child.

Newly christened “Four,” he discovers during initiation that he will succeed in Dauntless. Initiation is only the beginning, though; Four must claim his place in the Dauntless hierarchy. His decisions will affect future initiates as well as uncover secrets that could threaten his own future—and the future of the entire faction system.

Two years later, Four is poised to take action, but the course is still unclear. The first new initiate who jumps into the net might change all that. With her, the way to righting their world might become clear. With her, it might become possible to be Tobias once again.
bestselling author Veronica Roth comes a companion volume to the worldwide bestselling divergent series, told from the per-spective of the immensely popular character Tobias. The four pieces included here—The Transfer, The Initiate, The Son, and The Traitor—plus three additional exclusive scenes, give readers an electrifying glimpse into the history and heart of Tobias, and set the stage for the epic saga of the Divergent trilogy.
