In this first novel of the Incarnations of Immortality, Piers Anthony combines a gripping story of romance and conflicting loyalties with a deeply moving examination of the meaning of life and death. This is a novel that will long linger in the reader's mind.

Shooting Death was a mistake, as Zane soon discovered. For the man who killed the Incarnation of Death was immediately forced to assume the vacant position! Thereafter, he must speed over the world, riding his pale horse, and ending the lives of others.

Zane was forced to accept his unwelcome task, despite the rules that seemed woefully unfair. But then he found himself being drawn into an evil plot of Satan. Already the prince of Evil was forging a trap in which Zane must act to destroy Luna, the woman he loved.

He could see only one possible way to defeat the Father of Lies. It was unthinkable--but he had no other solution!

Opinion

From Library Staff

When Zane shot Death, he learned, too late, that he would have to assume his place, speeding over the world riding his pale horse, and ending the lives of others. The first in the Incarnations of Immortality series.

When Zane - the tale's protagonist - accidentally murders Death, he must assume the Grim Reaper's responsibilities. His life becomes one of endless travel, performing the grisly duties of Death. This, the first book in the Incarnations of Immortality series, blurs the lines between living and non-living; ambition and duty.

Sort like Santa Claus in reverse.
Nobody wanted him to visit them.
Unending work with no respect.
Without death, population explosion.
Dark, but trippy ride! Horse could be transformed into car sign of the times.

While I enjoyed this book, I found the rest of this series much less engaging. On A Pale Horse is definitely worth the read.

Not normally my type of reading but I really liked this whole series. It was creative and dark and satiric.

Piers has some odd ideas about sin. Otherwise, an entertaining adventure with some interesting characters.

This turned out to be a highly awesome book!!! I highly recommend!!! The concept that Death is a living person is interesting. Zane is a great character!!

Listened to this story on audio book and well worth a listen, if simply for the great narration skills of George Guidall!! I've not read much along the fantasy genre, but did enjoy this story and look forward to listening to the remaining installations in Piers Anthony's Incarnations series. There was love, hate, humor and a lot of fun--7 out of 10 for me.

The story's protagonist, Zane, accidentally murders Death and must assume the Grim Reaper's task of doling out the final demise of people around the globe. It's not a job he asked for, but due to the circumstances and laws of the netherworld, he's bound to a contract with no escape clause. This, the first book in Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series, is by far the best.
