Though the author has a modicum of talent, this is a very raw, amateurish work that needed a quality editor. If you choose to go with a first person narrator, that person had better be a solid human being, not a borderline head case like the young woman in this book. She goes from being mentally ill enough to (spoiler alert) smash her own foot to a few pages later talking about how she "loves the ablative in Greek". What? Oh, she's telling us (as opposed to showing us) what a brilliant scholar she's become, and light years away from the nut job who hammers her own feet. This book is a mess.

I was reminded of the awkwardness and glory in being a teenage girl. There were no all-good girls when I was growing up, and no all-bad ones either. This story is so REAL... I almost feel it has been filed away as 'memories' rather than a tale I happened to read...

I was a little unsure of reading this book as I usually are not interested in coming of age angst between teenage girls. But I am glad I did as the teenage segments of their friendship was mostly told in a flashback style with most of the story focusing on the present day situation between them. A tale of perception and how our memory plays tricks on us as to what we think the reality of our past was verses the truth of what has been. I was totally engrossed in it by half way through. For a debut it is brilliant. I will keep an eye out for her next one.

Wow - amazing book about two young women, friendship and how life can take unexpected turns.
