A well-researched book---with many studies and short stories—that goes on a bit too long (276 pages) in convincing us of the benefits of water, and occasionally veers into New Age la-la-ness. The author clearly loves his laid-back lifestyle in California and is sincere in sharing his experiences as a water protector/evangelist: “…physically, cognitively, sensuously, financially, creatively, productively, spiritually, and healthfully.”

I really wanted to like this book, but I think it was just way too long for the topic. I gave up 1/3 of the way through.

A fascinating book on an equally fascinating topic. Nichols looks into the science behind why people love water - all kinds of water, and all kinds of activities on it. From fishing to surfing, from ponds to oceans and everywhere you can find water in between.

A great deal of this research I've read elsewhere in books on happiness, mindfulness, meditation and neuroscience, but the overall tenor of this book is unique. And it is true - both emotionally and scientifically - water is good for us. It can help us calm down, it can help centre us, it helps wounded veterans and those with PTSD learn to live with today, it can help children learn better, it can help those with mental disabilities, and so much more….

It is only in the last chapter that Nichols mentions environmental destruction and the degradation of our waterways - and I think that could have used more explication.

Yet, overall this was a fascinating read. Nichols is a wonderful writer - able to write with emotional complexity and depth on issues that are dear to his heart, but he can also easily explain the science behind his theories and can elucidate the neuroscience he cites. A wonderful book - recommended.
