"Even while Amanda is both celebrated and attacked for her fearlessness in asking for help [in her artistic endeavors], she finds that there are important things she cannot ask for--as a musician, as a friend, and as a wife. She learns that she isn't alone in this--that so many people are afraid to ask for help, and it paralyzes their lives and relationships. In this ... book, she explores these barriers in her own life and in the lives of those around her, and discovers the emotional, philosophical, and practical aspects of the art of asking"--Amazon.com.

This is one of those books that smacked me upside the head and made me rethink...well, pretty much everything. I've admired Amanda Palmer for a while, but The Art of Asking resonated with me at a subatomic level and illuminated some things that have been drifting around my head for a long time, g... could not connect with the book.
maybe it works for others as many excellent reviews?
brene brown seems clearer and has less "baggage"
that's the word-- lots of baggage.

This is one of my all time favorite books and one I recommend to almost anyone. Even if you don't like Amanda Palmer's music or creative aspirations the message in the book of acceptance and community is inspiring. Her humor and candid voice keeps her outlandish stories completely down to earth and relatable. -- Jenny (See more of my picks by following WoodneathJenny)

Very inspiring woman. I was drawn to the title as I too have difficulty asking for myself; asking for others not a problem.
I now want to track down Amanda's music and art, it sounds intriguing. Picked up a book of short stories by Neil Gaiman, read a couple of the stories so far.... interesting, makes me think and I like that.

Unexpectedly inspiring. It was recommended to me so I read it. Amazing! It IS hard for me to ask for help and this has opened my eyes a little wider.

Audiobook has some music. Strange type of book to class. Definitely more "autobiography" than anything , but with the intent of letting the reader develop his or her own understanding from the author's (very personal) insight. Open and honest to a degree I can't describe.

I did not expect this book to make me cry. It did. it happened more than once. I really felt like Amanda Palmer let us into her life with this book. I cried. I laughed.Amanda Palmer has always had a great relationship with her fans and I feel like this book continued that.Amanda treats her fans like they are her friends and this felt like she was having an intimate conversation with all her friends about her life. About the choices she's made and how she got where she is now. The stories she tells in this are so interesting to me. I was so pulled into every single one.

The stories she tells in this are so interesting to me.The writing was wonderful as well. I was so pulled into every single one. The entire message about asking for things that we need. Being able to take help when it's offered. It was really beautiful and necessary for a lot of people. Including me. If you haven't seen Amanda's TED Talk then you should go watch it. Then pick up this book.

I found this book to be entertaining and enlightening. It dealt with why people struggle sometimes to ask for the things we need and followed Amanda Palmer's incredibly intriguing life story up until now. I've never actually heard of Amanda Palmer until reading this book but she made me care about her story, her music, and her career and made me want to be apart of her tight-knit family of a fan base. Amanda Palmer is a caring, enthusiastic, soulful, "mostly" shameless, independent woman who knows how to ask for the things she needs. This book shows her readers exactly who she is and that she is also human, despite being a huge rock star. Delving into how hard it is to be an artist and how people may not take her type of profession seriously, she shows resilience and passion for what she does.

"Sometimes people will prove to be untrustworthy. When that happens, the correct response is not: 'Fuck! I knew I couldn't trust anybody!' The correct response is: 'Some people just suck.' Moving right along."
