"Having fled a difficult home life, Civil War nurse Abigail Stuart feels like her only friend in the world is sweet but gravely wounded patient Jeremiah Calhoun. Fearing he won't survive, the Confederate soldier's last wish is that Abigail look after his sickly sister at home. Marry him, return to his horse farm, and it'll be hers. Left with few choices, Abigail takes him up on his offer and moves to Missouri after his death, but just as the family learns to accept her, the real Jeremiah Calhoun appears--puzzled to find a confounding woman posing as his wife. Jeremiah is determined to have his life back to how it was before the war, but his own wounds limit what he can do on his own. Still not fully convinced Abigail isn't duping him, he's left with no choice but to let the woman stay and help--not admitting to himself she may provide the healing his entire family needs."--
Civil War nurse Abigail Stuart marries a dying confederate soldier calling himself Jeremiah Calhoun and moves to his horse farm after his death to look after his sister, but not long after reaching the farm, the real Jeremiah Calhoun arrives.

This was a post-civil war novel based in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. A Union nurse marries a Confederate soldier as he is dying and moves to his home to tend to his mother and sister. There are some twists in the story. This read was akin to watching a Hallmark movie on a Sunday afternoon.

Whether marrying a man she has never met, escaping bushwackers, avoiding skunks, or bringing horses into her "husband's" bedroom, Abigail will delight readers. This story contains a very humorous plot, well-developed characters, and a great lesson in trusting God even when things are "inconvenient."

The premise of this story really drew me to it. The war nurse marries her dying patient, promising to move to his ranch and keep it running and take care of his beloved sister - but he's not who he says he is and just as she's getting comfortable, the real Jeremiah Calhoun shows up very much alive and he already has a lady love he plans to marry to boot! She's already made herself invaluable around the ranch and they come to an agreement for a period of time she is to stay. A lot happens during that time, to say the least. This story wastes no time with slow moving chit chat, something is always very much afoot. It's sweet and fun, and a little different from your average western.
