The definitive autobiography of Willie Nelson

"Unvarnished. Funny. Leaving no stone unturned."

. . . So say the publishers about this book I've written.

What I say is that this is the story of my life, told as clear as a Texas sky and in the same rhythm that I lived it.

It's a story of restlessness and the purity of the moment and living right. Of my childhood in Abbott, Texas, to the Pacific Northwest, from Nashville to Hawaii and all the way back again. Of selling vacuum cleaners and encyclopedias while hosting radio shows and writing song after song, hoping to strike gold.

It's a story of true love, wild times, best friends, and barrooms, with a musical sound track ripping right through it.

My life gets lived on the road, at home, and on the road again, tried and true, and I've written it all down from my heart to yours.

I enjoyed this autobiography. I am a Willie Nelson fan. He has written and performed some of the greatest country songs ever - like "Crazy". I especially of his renditions of classic songs that are not country like "Stardust" and "Someone to Watch Over Me". He brings a unique voice and phrasing to great old songs. He seems to be very honest about his failings as well as his success. I enjoyed some hours with Willie and recommend the book. Kristi & Abby Tabby

Nelson's life is amazing in itself and the narrative doesn't need to add much more, but it does make clear his love and humor. He is true to his country roots while unafraid to try almost anything ( love the recounting of his smoking a joint in the White House- not many could so claim) and combines an irascible sense of adventure with a deep kindness and sympathy for friends and us mortals.

Reading this book is like sitting down and hanging out with Willie Nelson and listening to him spin tales about his life. I have no idea how factual or historically accurate it is, but Willie’s love of music, family and people are the main themes. He admits to all the mistakes he’s made in his life and recounts some crazy adventures over the years.

I have been a casual fan all of my life, and it was fascinating to hear about the origins of many of my favorite songs. And I had no idea that Willie Nelson first had a career as a songwriter and also penned many of the classics I love that were sung by other artists, such as Patsy Cline’s “Crazy”.

Willie's music is way better than either his acting or this autobiography.

An amazing autobiography. I find many autobiographies not only boring, but terribly written. That was not the case here. Willie tells his story wonderfully. I read this book so fast because I was so into it. I respect him way more than I did before. Please read this book if you think Willie Nelson is just that "pothead country dude" because he is so much more than that. He has been in many movies, has written multiple books, has so many famous friends, and has had many crazy life experiences!! He definitely doesn't just sit around getting high LOL

Fantastic read. Willie has definitely done it all. His memory is astonishing as I was impressed by the detail he went into. Always appreciated Willie but now have a much deeper and thorough understanding.

I love an autobiography and I love Willie Nelson so was immediately drawn to this pick. It's been fascinating to learn more about this Texas icon, his upbringing in Texas towns, and his impact on Texas music and culture -- two of my favorite things. Recommended by Lisa

OK book. Maybe more suitable for his fans. He doesn't say much personal info. Just basically tells about which producers and singers he worked with, and which wives and children he had, and how often he moved his home.

I've been a "Wooly" (my nephew's childhood pronunciation") for 45+ years but I had a much different idea about him. He's such a character and definitely his own self that you just have to laugh off his wild behavior. I don't care for country music but I'll listen to him all day, especially with his partners in crime: Bobbie Nelson, Leon Russell, Waylon Jennings, JJ Cale, Eric Clapton and so many others.

Great book about Willies life thru fame and fortune and heartache to his troubles with being busted for drugs and dealings with IRS. Truly a well written book about his life
