These seven stories were written between 1998 and 2002 when Vasquez was living in Europe. Vasquez is learning to become a writer at this point in time. His later novels, "The Informers" and particularly "The Sound of Things Falling" are wonderful.

What boring the so-called stories about love! More than two of them could not read. Although the language of the author - wonderful. If he used his talent to other topics!

Would have enjoyed just one of the stories expanded into more detail (i.e. David Adams Richards' style). As previously described, these all have depressing features and unhappy endings. One at a time is enough for me!

Beautifully written stories, but I will warn you; there are no happy endings here. The translation is superb.

**Not a part of my rating, but worth mentioning:**
The majority of these stories focus on characters that felt decidedly "middle-aged" (I wouldn't rank any of them younger than 35-ish, by how they read). I know that conflict makes for good stories (and stability for bad) but Vasquez reveals a pessimistic streak regarding relationships. Every character in this book is unfaithful or with somebody unfaithful or miserable in some way. I wouldn't recommend this collection if you're in a happy relationship and optimistic about the future. :)
