Revolution is over. The war has begun. Cyclops and his Uncanny X-Men are tired of the hunt. After another near-fatal Sentinel attack, they take the fight to S.H.I.E.L.D. Maria Hill claims she doesn't know who's building the Sentinels - but she hasn't stopped them, either. She's relying on Dazzler, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s mutant liaison, to help defuse the situation. But Dazzler lies incapacitated in Mystique's headquarters -and Mystique makes a convincing imitation! And where is Magneto, the former head of the mutant movement? Then, it's an Original Sin tie-in as Charles Xavier's last will and testament is discovered, but what' concealed within its pages might be the X-Men's ultimate undoing! Could a previously unknown power now be their greatest threat? How will the Uncanny X-Men cope with the shadows of Xavier's past?

(I noticed a typo. Fabio’s last name is shown as Media on the title page but referred to as Medina when Maria Hill confronts Hijack in his home.)

The X-Men are up against S.H.I.E.L.D. This section of the agency is currently led by one Maria Hill, a no-nonsense operative with nothing but contempt for mutants. She sees them as arrogant threats, storming through time and space, casually disrupting human lives. This causes her to take a hard line against them, with little or no quarter.

However, she’s not the only player on the board. Mystique is back. Perhaps one of the most enigmatic figures in the X-Men canon, this shapeshifter has few values and a sliding morality as shifty as her physical body. In order to save mutants, she’s found a way to start a war between X-Men and S.H.I.E.L.D., to the detriment of both. Why? So that her tiny corner of the world will be preserved without interference from either.

Mystique has always been an absorbing figure. Shapeshifters in mythology are commonly tricksters: sly, mischievous, self serving, scheming and untrustworthy by nature. Mystique is no exception. With her willingness to use anybody, including friends, enemies and allies, she’s one of those characters you love to hate. You despise her morals but secretly wish you had her abilities and unflinching drive to reach her goals.

This book also deals with the last will and testament of Charles Xavier, an event that causes considerable emotional upheaval. The bombshells dropped by the departed professor are nothing compared to the way the various characters react to the situation. It’s particularly wrenching to see the old X-Men dealing with their hatred of Scott Summers, still inwardly miserable over his culpability in Professor X’s death.

The comic ends on an edgy cliffhanger. It points the reader towards the one mutant Professor X was never able to reveal to his fellow mutants. With a moral dilemma that’s not easily resolved, it’s bound to make for edgy reading.
