Good book about a real-life IRA assassination attempt on Margaret Thatcher. The book starts out as darkly humorous, but as the plot picks up speed and each of the main characters gets more enmeshed in personal crises, the mood turns dark, sad, bitter and sometimes hopeless.

This book is not about the bombing of the Tory Convention in 1984 in Brighton and failed assassination attempt on Margaret Thatcher but rather the event serves merely as the backdrop to the story of a middle-aged assistant hotel manager, his daughter, and a young IRA recruit. In terms of politics, there is only a short chapter in which the IRA man's mother expresses her views on the likely outcome of events. |

Absorbing and a beautifully written fictional account of the real life bombing of the Grand Hotel in Brighton targeting Margaret Thatcher. It is taken from the perspective of some of the hotel staff and one of the bombers. You can see the radicalisation of a young man take place and understand it but terrorist acts always take innocent lives.
