Growing up, Mallory "Mouse" Dodge learned that the best way to survive was to say nothing. After she escaped her terrifying childhood and spent years being homeschooled by loving adoptive parents, she is starting her senior year at a public high school. The first day, she runs into Rider Stark, the friend and protector from her childhood, and Mallory realizes that their bond never really faded. But as Rider's life spirals out of control, Mallory faces a choice between staying silent and speaking out--for the people she loves, the life she wants and the truths that need to be heard.--

This was a superb read. There is simply so much there in terms of character development. With Mallory in particular, at times you feel like you even play a role in her decisions. The characters are adorable and you find yourself falling in love with them on every page. It is a romance but that intertwines with the rest of the plot.

really good and empowering book. helped me realize the importance of speaking up when something needs to be said and how to find myself. It made my thankful for my loving home and realize not everyone has the same love or chances but deserves the same happiness.

Another Good Reads Choice Award nominee that sounded good. Unfortunately it ended up being too YA for me. I liked the premise of Mallory and Ryder's strong bond from surviving a terrible foster home together. I could relate to Mallory's anxieties having my own social anxiety. But Mallory's inner dialogue was too sophmoric for me. Also, I was looking for a drama, not a first romance. Teens may like this, but adults will want to skip this one.

Sweet YA romance, exactly what you'd expect from Jennifer Armentrout. Trigger warning: past abuse, brief scenes of violence
