In World War I Paris, Opaline Duplessi, an employee at the famous La Fantasie Russie jewelry store, spends her time making trench watches for soldiers at the front, and mourning jewelry for the mothers, wives, and lovers of those who have fallen. People say that Opaline's creations are magical, a word she would rather not use. But she does have a rare gift, a form of lithomancy that allows her to translate the energy emanating from the stones and receive messages from beyond the grave. In her mind, she is not a mystic, but merely a messenger, giving voice to soldiers who died before they were able to properly express themselves to loved ones. Until one day, one of these fallen soldiers communicates a message directly to her, and Opaline sets off on a journey into the darkest corners of wartime Paris and across the English Channel, where the exiled Romanov dowager empress waits to discover the fate of her family. --

Set in Paris , Place des Vogses , in a time of turbulence and hardship ...during World war 1.... involving witchcaft , betrayal, love and heartache , the Russian revolution leading to the Bolshevik murders of Tzar Nicholas II and the Romanov’s in 1918....a gifted young gold and silversmith working with gemstones and crystals, desperately trying to discover the truth and find her path in life , a poignant and beautifully written novel.

It was interesting to read about how a large city, in this case--Paris--managed to survive during WW1. Humans are survivors. The jewelry making was interesting, but I 'm not sure how much was real. It added color to the story as did the Russian immigration of people fleeing Russia, tying in the story of the Tsar and his family.

Had potential but didn't take history, alchemy, or jewelry making very deep. Some of the story became redundant. The story has the makings of a really good read but I feel it didn't deliver.
