See 1980s Dublin through the eyes of fourteen-year-old Conor, who is looking for a break from a home strained by his parents' relationship and money troubles while trying to adjust to his new inner-city public school where the kids are rough and the teachers are rougher. He finds a glimmer of hope in the mysterious, über-cool Raphina. With the aim of winning her heart he invites her to star in his band's music videos. There's only one problem: he's not part of a band yet.

From Library Staff

1980's Dublin boy makes a music video to impress a girl.

The movie musical is alive and well in Sing Street, which might just be the single most lovable movie of the last 5 years. The set-up is pretty well trod (a nerd starts a band to impress a girl) but the execution makes it warm and sweet and features some legitimately excellent original songs.

An incredibly fun and heartfelt crowd-pleaser with one of the best soundtracks in recent memory.

It's difficult for me to remember a more joyful, smart, and pleasant coming-of-age movie made in recent years. Sing Street is just as kooky, spontaneous, and anti-establishment as The Breakfast Club and just as sweet, silly, and romantic as Sixteen Candles. The infectious original songs, which Gl... In 1980’s Ireland, teenage Conor is hit hard by the recession. At his tough new inner-city school, he starts up a band to impress the mysterious and beautiful Raphina, and soon finds the value in expressing himself through music. Although this movie is technically a musical, it manages to avoid the cheesiness that generally comes with that genre. The acting is superb, even more so when you consider how inexperienced the majority of the cast was at the time. Raphina and Conor’s romance feels as natural as their relationships with others. The dialogue is funny, dark and has a deeper meaning every time I watch the movie. A must-see for movie lovers of all ages. Rating: 4/5

Good-hearted movie. Sort of the Commitments meets Breakfast Club with lots of 1980s soundtracks. Well worth the watch.

From the director of "Once" and "Begin Again" comes another heartwarming film about the ways in which music can impact a person's life. "Sing Street" is a coming of age story set in Dublin, Ireland, and while the plot tends to be predictable, I still found this to be an entertaining film. The child actors are charming, which is particularly impressive because most are unknowns. Fans of the 80s will enjoy "Sing Street" because it is very much a portrait of that decade with a soundtrack to match. I enjoyed watching the kids work their way through the popular bands of the time while trying to find belonging in a band of their own.

It was so boring I couldn't be bothered to finish the movie. I don't mean it was 'bad'. It was competently directed and had believable characters and well written dialogue, and I could see someone who isn't me getting a lot out of it. It's just that the movie offered no compelling reason to care.

Such a pleasant and realistic contrast with the way Hollywood usually treats movies about adolescents. Here the kids are normal, with normal problems and hopes and desires and live lives far removed from the earth-shaking angsts that American teens so often display cinematically. This is comfortable, gentle, tender, compassionate enjoyable film making. And watching.

Your problem is that you're not happy being sad. But that's what love is, Cosmo. Happy sad.
