In a studio in Germany, when making a recording of Liszt's works with Lang Lang, one audio engineer said: "Liszt is the above-all father of the piano." In our times at all international piano competitions Liszt's works are mandatory part, for musical and technical brilliance. Now, being a music teacher in my youth and being of origin Hungarian, I absolutely love Liszt, as a romantic and also a precursor of modern music. He is great as a composer of "program-music", often his pieces are musical poems on stories of mythology or poetry (Orpheus, Mazeppa, Les Preludes) or musical effects describing natural or imagined phenomena (Les jets d'eaux de Villa d'Este, gnomenreigen (dance of the gnomes), forest sounds in the wind, feux follets (mysterious dim lights in the night), and even the Mephisto Waltz (dance in a country inn, when Mephisto bewitches the dancers into romantic adventures out in the woods), and even Csardas Macabre (dance of the corpses). He was the greatest piano genius of all times. Now, I am writing here to tell you that, tanks to Youtube, one can listen to or even see the greatest pianists of out time performing these pieces. I listened to the biggest piano virtuosos on Youtube, and I want to share with you that, as for Liszt's some works, I find that Yevgeni Kissin was so far the most brilliant perfomer, mainly of "La Campanella," "Mephisto Waltz," and "Feux Follets" - those who posted this last piece with Kissin as performer, rightfully wrote there that his interpretation is the very best available. Absolute brilliant play, when he was abt 26 yrs old. Another thing I'd like to mention here is that at practically every brilliant performance, there is always 1 percent who give "thumb down", no matter how wonderful that interpretation is. Don't listen to those few. I love Kissin, even his sincere, full hearted body language when he plays.
