"John, Paul, George, and Ringo remain the world's favorite thing. Yet every theory ever devised to explain why has failed. It wasn't their timing. It wasn't drugs. It wasn't that they were the voice of a generation. The vast majority of Beatles fans today weren't born when the records came out-- yet the allure of the music keeps on growing, nearly fifty years after the band split. The world keeps dreaming the Beatles, long after the Beatles themselves figured the dream was over. Our Beatles have outlasted theirs." --

The absolute best “light” Beatle book ever! Rob wrote as if he had downloaded every thing I had ever felt or thought about the Beatles in my life (woman, age 60). If you are even a mild lover of the Beatles, you will enjoy this book! I have often challenged myself to go ONE whole day without some reference to the Beatles being posited in front of my daily life, and there is ALWAYS some kind of reminder, whether it be a song on the radio, a t-shirt, a mention, or a written reference to the band...every day! They are ours forever! Read this book!

This book has some interesting observations on the Beatles and their legacy, but suffers from some of the nonsensical over-analysis of the author. His take on certain songs and certain events in Beatles' history is bizarre at times - he stretches things far out of shape to try to prove some obscure point. I stuck with the book but have to admit that at times I was tempted to ditch it as so much self-indulgent rubbish.

How could there be anything else to say about The Beatles? I've read enough books on them to think surely I could stop. Wrong. Rob Sheffield has written a book unlike any other. His subtitle says it all: "the love story of one band and the whole world." Sheffield writes from a very personal place about The Beatles, but its a personal place that I find has deep resonance to me as a Beatlemaniac. This book is like sitting around with your best buddy--or a complete stranger for that matter--and waxing nostalgic, or arguing best songs or most underrated songs, or why you hate Paul or not. I could not put this book down. It is a truly exceptional an unique addition to the Beatles book canon. Highest recommendation.
