Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now.

Similar to George Orwell's "1984", this is a dystopian novel telling of the overthrow of the US government as we know it by the Christian-like organization called the REPUBLIC OF GILEAD. In this new order of life, women hold little to no power. They are sorted into one of a few different categories, each serving a single purpose for the growth, well-being, & overall greater good of the REPUBLIC OF GILEAD. "The Handmaid's Tale" is the account of one such woman, Offred, who's SOLE purpose in this new regime is to be impregnated by her Commander & deliver a health baby to be given to the Commander's wife. By serving in this role, she is supposedly serving to repopulate the world with untainted human life. She finds her mind wandering back to old times with her husband, daughter, mother, & friends before the old US government leaders were assassinated by the new leaders & creators of the REPUBLIC OF GILEAD. Offred finds a kind of favor with her Commander which leads to special favors from various others in the community. One of these connections leads to her eventual escape to what is believed to be Canada. But did she really escape to Canada & eventually to England? Was she able to rebuild her life? Did she ever reconnect with her husband or daughter? Did her husband or daughter even survive? The book ends with a speaker giving a talk about this book, this historical account of Offred. The speaker confirms that there is no evidence that confirms the whereabouts of Offred after her escape.

Normally I don't mind a book that leaves the reader hanging with more questions than answers. In this case, however, a few more points of resolution would've been nice. So much of the book went into setting up the scene if you will, then when events started to take place, it seemed like the story went a bit to fast, leaving out details that would've been nice to know. It's definitely one of those books that leaves you in deep thought & drawing parallels to the real-life world as we know it.

Age recommendation: 16 & up (some awkward sexual situations)

On a scale of 1-10 stars, I give it 8.
