Irreverent, poignant, and revealing, this meditation on the sweet temptation of wealth and the vainglorious quest for paradise as they exist in Aspen, Colorado, features a "cast of characters (that) includes such barn-size satirical targets as exclusive health clubs, over-the-hill drug dealers and movie stars and rock stars of wattages bright and dim" (The New Republic). Aspen may be frivolous, but this book is not. Gonzo journalist Ted Conover seeks to uncover its mystique, working first as a cabdriver, then as a newspaper reporter. He infiltrates fancy parties, meets Hunter S. Thompson, sneaks into John Denver's new-agey conference and others, crashes a UFO landing. He examines the effects of hedonism, growth, wealth and development on the environment of a once-pristine tourist resort that both needs and resents its guests. A thought-provoking yet witty, breezy read.
