Adaptation of the Shakespeare play, filmed during a stage performance: "This immersive and darkly poetic cinematic experience brings the play's iconic fairies, spells and hallucinatory lovers to life ... the feats of visual imagination are ingenious and plentiful, but beating at the center of the film is an emotionally moving take on the deeper human aspects of Shakespeare's beloved tale"--Container.

Of course a Julie Taymor Shakespeare play is going to be inventive and this one meets expectations. The staging and effects are at once minimal and expansive. Watch what she does with a silken tarp and aerial moves. Watch also how she uses child gymnast as fairies and stagehands--the "moving" forest is pure JT. The costumes and lighting are also interesting and effective. What I enjoyed most, however, was what I enjoy every time I see AMND--the humor and humanity. The four actors who play the sometimes- at- odds lovers were terrific. Most of the cast were unfamiliar to me except for the actor who plays Jon-the-Martian on Supergirl and is Oberon here.
