The story follows a young mother who, when on a day trip with her husband and son, commits a startling act of violence and, to her horror, has no idea why. The event launches an inverted and utterly surprising crime thriller whose driving force is not the 'who' or the 'what,' but the 'why.' When an investigator finds himself obsessed with uncovering the woman's buried motive, together they travel a harrowing journey into the depths of her psyche.

bill pullman is an excellent actor. I love him. This series copies the first twin peaks in style and content. And it's very watchable, which is the problem because once again, the exciting sexual violence against women is the driver.violence against women excites the audience. This is Written and directed by men. What do men know about sexual violence against women? Other than being the perpetrators? Why do men write and direct all the violence against women movies? why are there almost no women directors ? Because if men lose control of their heroic narrative they won't be able to have their cake and eat it too. Here's the problem: heros need the violated woman for your reason to live, -- without the damsel in distress, there would be no heroic narrative.

I watched this series to the end, but felt it needed an editor. It would have made a good 2 to 3 hour film, but not 8 hours. I found there was too much gratuitous "titillating" sexual deviance - especially the detective's S & M addiction. Did we really need this to explain the murder? Only a mild recommendation. Thought this "story" was so good, and well done, i'll give it a few months then read the book.

Long, drawn-out story which takes too many episodes to tell its story. Pullman is fine and Biel shows some acting chops, but I wasn't completely convinced by the meandering plot with too many characters and side players who don't really figure in solving this mystery. For instance, the whole storyline about Pullman's failing marriage, and kinky sex-life was completely unnecessary, imho.

Based on the best selling novel of the same name by Petra Hammesfahr, The Sinner is a compelling psychological thriller. Jessica Biel is amazing and really shows her true acting talent. Bill Pullman is also great in his role as a troubled cop trying to help her.
