Then She Was Gone
A Novel
Book - 2018
"Ten years after her teenage daughter disappears, a woman crosses paths with a charming single father whose young child feels eerily familiar, in this evocative, suspenseful drama from New York Times bestselling author Lisa Jewell--perfect for fans of Paula Hawkins and Liane Moriarty. Ellie Mack was the perfect daughter. She was fifteen, the youngest of three. She was beloved by her parents, friends, and teachers. She and her boyfriend made a teenaged golden couple. She was days away from an idyllic post-exams summer vacation, with her whole life ahead of her. And then she was gone. Now, her mother Laurel Mack is trying to put her life back together. It's been ten years since her daughter disappeared, seven years since her marriage ended, and only months since the last clue in Ellie's case was unearthed. So when she meets an unexpectedly charming man in a cafe, no one is more surprised than Laurel at how quickly their flirtation develops into something deeper. Before she knows it, she's meeting Floyd's daughters--and his youngest, Poppy, takes Laurel's breath away. Because looking at Poppy is like looking at Ellie. And now, the unanswered questions she's tried so hard to put to rest begin to haunt Laurel anew. Where did Ellie go? Did she really run away from home, as the police have long suspected, or was there a more sinister reason for her disappearance? Who is Floyd, really? And why does his daughter remind Laurel so viscerally of her own missing girl?"--

I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller and could not put it down once I started reading. The characters and plot are interesting, and the story kept me in suspense until the very satisfying ending!

Comment
Add a CommentI enjoyed reading this book and thought it was well written. I liked the flow of the book and it held my interest all the way through. Great idea and story line.
I did not like this book and cannot understand how it is being compared to Gone Girl and the like. The “mystery” is very quickly answered and the characters are generally unlikeable and underdeveloped. The conclusion is wildly far fetched and disturbing on many levels. Save your time and read something else.
I truly loved this book and I'm hard to please but this caught my attention in the first page and held my attention all the way to the end. I'm actually wanting to buy this book. If you want a really good suspicion this is the one.
Suspense, tied in with an interesting story line. Well developed story had me turning page after page thinking one thing was going to happen and another twist would occur. Highly recommend this book.
Well that certainly took some interesting and bizarre turns! I enjoyed it a lot and it certainly held my interest!
Still reading it at the moment, but its making me incredibly sad. Surprised I don't see that more in the comments, really hoping for some closure at the end.
Very well done. Things got going early on in the book, some people may have guess on what happens others do not. I think it was very well written and a good simple mystery.
Read this for last month's Book Club read. It was interesting though fairly predictable. I too was able to guess "what was what" and "who was who" pretty early on, as other reviewers have mentioned.
All in all, I'd recommend it to anyone looking for an easily read distraction <3
I couldn't put this book down. The author's writing style was really good and I was hooked the whole time into the story. A mom's daughter has been missing for years and something about her new boyfriend's family has her thinking about the past.
