When the Cold War ended, many, including former secretary of state Madeleine Albright, believed that democracy had triumphed politically once and for all. Yet nearly thirty years later, a repressive and destructive force has begun to reemerge on the global stage that looks very much like fascism. Albright paints a clear picture of how fascism flourishes and explains why it is once again taking hold worldwide, identifying the factors contributing to its rise.

CONTINUES comment begun under Book entry at www.jocolibrary.org
--- AntiSemitism was 19th Cent theory that Jews have "bad blood" that would pollute Europe; the theory died with Hitler. Arabs are Semitic, modern Jews predominantly are not. "AntiSemitism" is irrelevant to Israel.
--- Albright repeats common blunder that Israel (in Near East) is in "Middle East" (India). She also thinks Nazi SA = SS.
--- Says US has no aggressive aims, but must dominate other nations lest they act unwisely, using coercion to force compliance.
--- Upholds NATO absorption of E. Europe after Warsaw Pact dissolved. (Omits Obama spying on other NATO leaders.) Pretends US missiles in E. Europe are only vs Iran; blames Putin for not believing this. Upholds Clinton's "humanitarian" bombing of Russia-ally Serbia to help Albanian terrorists seize Kosovo. (Albright called Serbs "disgusting"; her investment firm sought to profit in Kosovo. Clinton also bombed African aspirin factory, and killed eminent Iraqi poetess with missile.)
--- Blames Putin for resisting US world-hegemony; his refusal to submit threatens the international order; he uses US bombings and invasions as excuse to re-arm. Putin wickedly accepted Russian inhabitants who seceded from Ukraine after we subverted Kiev government. He kept our fleet from occupying Sevastopol, and perversely saved Syria from total ruin by US-backed jihadists. Albright says Putin swung 2016 election (fact: Dems lost because they cared more about spreading transgenderism than restoring US jobs). Blames Trump for rejecting anti-Russia xenophobia.
--- Attacks Poles and Hungarians (overrun and long ruled by Mongols, Germans, Russians, Turks) for now resisting Muslim influx (but not Israel for barring return of native refugees). European self-preservation is fascist.
--- Blames Erdogan for opposing gay recruitment and for criticizing Israel's ravagement of Palestinians. Rightly blames Trump for renouncing Iran deal (Iran has no nukes; under NPT we should have junked ours decades ago; Israel's huge hoard remains undeclared). Omits Israeli murders of Iranian scientists.
--- Blames Trump for wrongs she says he may commit, but not Clinton, Bush, Obama, or herself for wrongs actually committed. "Trump is the first anti-democratic president in modern U.S. history." "[H]e flaunts his disdain for ... America itself." (In 1993/4, Clinton henchmen ransacked hundreds of confidential FBI files on Republicans.) Calls Trump's plan for lower taxes, deregulation, and revived manufacturing "disinformation" and demagogy. Blames Trump for criticizing (1) Liberal Media that seek to overthrow him and (2) partisan judges who issue untenable orders to obstruct and delay (a common anti-democratic Liberal tactic). Praises Obama's "healing presence" (he disparaged police and Christian gunowners, but upheld Ferguson rioters.)
--- Says Trump alienates foreigners, making our control of them more difficult. Ties Trump to wicked peace-mongers like Charles Lindbergh (T denounced "foolish wars" in 2019 St/Union speech). Blames Trump for keeping foreign Muslims out, but not Zionists for expelling native Palestinians. Opposes southern wall, but not Israeli wall slicing West Bank to slivers. Blames Trump for comparing violent criminals to snakes; yet Albright calls religious partisans "poisonous snakes crawling from their holes." (Clinton called Branch Davidians "a bunch of religious fanatics" after most were burned to death when he attacked their compound; he ignored Rwanda genocide.) Blames Catholics for supporting Jos McCarthy, but promotes current Dem McCarthyism. Says fascists twist the law (compare pretense that Amendments from 1860's require abortion and gay marriage).
--- CONCLUSION: Albright's book is a muddle of bigotry and hypocrisy. Evidently it has fooled many (see other comments).
