"From an internationally acclaimed author, a disturbing and addictive novel of domestic suspense where secrets kept hidden from spouses cause shocking surprises that hit home ... There's nothing unusual about a new family moving in at 91 Trinity Avenue. Except it's her house. And she didn't sell it. When Fiona Lawson comes home to find strangers moving into her house, she's sure there's been a mistake. She and her estranged husband, Bram, have a modern coparenting arrangement: bird's nest custody, where each parent spends a few nights a week with their two sons at the prized family home to maintain stability for their children. But the system built to protect their family ends up putting them in terrible jeopardy. In a domino effect of crimes and misdemeanors, the nest comes tumbling down. Now Bram has disappeared and so have Fiona's children. As events spiral well beyond her control, Fiona will discover just how many lies her husband was weaving and how little they truly knew each other. But Bram's not the only one with things to hide, and some secrets are best kept to oneself, safe as houses"--

Fiona Lawson returns home from a long weekend to find a new couple moving into her beloved home. Her husband and children are nowhere to be found. Using a podcast format, Fi explains her side of the story. Meanwhile, Fi's husband Bram is on the run and records his confession via a Word Document. The spiraling bad decisions and deceptions come one after another. The back-and-forth in time and multiple perspectives make this family drama/thriller speed along.

The beginning and middle were great. I just found the story way too long, could have been cut down.

Fi comes home early one day and discovers a couple moving in her home. It turns out the house was sold without her knowledge and her estranged husband has disappeared with her two young sons. What happened? Did he go on the run because he didn't want to lose his boys? Is Fi making up things? Or is there something more sinister going on? It took me a couple of chapters before I was into the story once I got used to at least 3 different timelines: the crime podcast, the husband, and Fi. It's a good suspense thriller with a few surprise twists.

I enjoy the current wave of suspense novels with female protagonists set in and around contemporary London. Despite the unappealing title, I chose to give this novel a go, and so glad I did. I loved the twists and turns of the plot and found the ending sad yet just.

Birds Nest Parenting - a novel idea this novel imposes on its main characters.

Fi & Bram's marriage falls apart after his second affair. His drinking & speeding have created more problems Bram hides from Fi.

Their children get to remain in their home while the parents shift between the home and an apartment based on their custody week - birds nest parenting!

When Bram finds himself blackmailed into a property fraud scheme his tormented mind is scrambling to create a loophole so Fi will not lose everything and Bram will not spend years in prison.

Bram's final actions are pure karma from a tormented mind.

A very good mystery and even at over 550 pages, I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. A few twists and turns, definitely worth your time.

A domestic thriller that keeps the reader on their toes through its slow-burn pace, reveal after reveal, until its perfect ending.

This book will make you rethink going over the speed limit or coveting that McMansion down the street. Fiona and her ex-husband, Bram, have a birds' nest custody agreement so they can keep their home in their pricey London neighborhood. Until one day Fiona comes home early from their trip to a moving van outside and a new couple moving in. This novel is full of twists and has an ending worthy of O Henry. -- Angie (See more of my picks by following WoodneathAngie in the catalog)
