Entertaining take on vampire lore, with some good-natured pokes at Twilight.

As an adult who read the entire Twilight series, I enjoyed this graphic novel quite a bit. Amusing references and interactions between the characters. Plus, it takes place in Portland, which is where I live so I recognized some of the places in the book. If you like vampires or Twilight you will probably enjoy this book.

AJ is starting Grade 6 and he feels like the only person in his class who is exactly the same as he was last year. On top of that, he still has a crush on Nia and he still can't work up the courage to talk to her. When they get paired up to work on a research project on Transylvania, AJ decides to make himself a bit more like the guys in the TV shows and books Nia loves, which means pretending he's a vampire. This plan only goes downhill when it turns out that Nia's interest in vampires isn't so much about hanging out with them, and more about slaying them!

I had so much fun reading this graphic novel. The art was really well done and very engaging; the pop culture and bookish references made me so happy; and the characters were diverse and endlessly charming, especially AJ's quirky and hilarious older sister. I hope that there are more of these coming soon!

This was lots of fun. AJ has a crush on Nia, has for a long time, but he is both too scared and not a vampire. Nia seems to be exclusively interested in vampires and not willing to bother with anyone else. AJ is already feeling a bit uncool and boring in relation to his other friends so decides the only way to get Nia's attention is to make her believe he is a vampire.

This goes poorly but it's all dealt with humour, I loved the references to other bits of pop culture, but the all around message of just being yourself and that that is more than enough is very welcome. Yeah it's not new or revolutionary but this is really a fun and cute read.
