Opinion

From Library Staff

#5 - Could be described as "Pulp Fiction"-esque with it's non-linear narrative and deep roster of characters weaving together a tapestry of crime and dark pasts, but this bold drama is no copy cat and has its own unique strengths and was one of my favorite movies I saw this year.

This movie started off so strong that I was planning to give it five stars. John Hamm was a great beginning but when he left the picture, the movie lost steam and steadily got worse. Some scenes were predictable. Some were contrived. Darlene (Erivo), should stick to singing. I haven't seen her in other roles but she showed no emotion during highly charged situations which made it difficult to buy the premise. Miles (Pullman), was a close runner-up. He must hold the record for length of a dying scene. In fact, he may still be dying. Then there was the length of time the cult leader dragged things out. Reluctantly, I'm giving three stars.

An odd ball thriller with odd ball characters. Gotta pay attention (we had to rerun a scene to see what had happened).

This kinda got bad reviews and dropped from theaters, but it's actually pretty good, if a bit derivative of other, better crime films, namely those of the Coen Brothers. In fact, Jeff Bridges is even in this. This is the kind of movie where a bunch of people with shady pasts and, perhaps nefarious intents, end up in the same place, in this case a groovy motel on the California/Nevada border. The great cast includes Bridges, Jon Hamm, Dakota Johnson, Cynthia Erivo, who does her own singing, and Chris Hemsworth, whose character is a mixture of Manson and Jim Morrison. If you like somewhat twisted crime stories and somewhat brutal violence, this is probably for you.

Good movie. Attention to detail and crafting characters. Great acting even the less capable actors pulled it off. Watch.

RE: Violent Movie--
This movie takes place at a hotel called the El Royale. The Nevada/Califorinia state boundary literally runs down the middle of the hotel. This hotel is important because some bank robbers in the 1960s buried $2 million under the hotel floor room. This movie had characters with different backgrounds: the vacuum salesman, the ballroom singer, the priest, the Marine soldier, and the charismatic group leader. In the movie, a bank robber disguised as a priest returns and tries to find and unearth the stolen money. ******
This movie had the style and feel of a Quintin Tarantino film. Because the movie was broken down by movie chapters. This movie reminded me of the movie called Pulp Fiction. El Royale just got more strange as it progressed. For example, El Royale had one hotel room that had about 20 microphone bugs. So, management could listen in to conversations that hotel costumers had. Also, the hotel rooms had two-way mirrors so that management can film what is going on in the hotel room. There were people getting shot and stabbed. So, the film was filled with rated R violence. If you like violence and blood splatter, then this movie is for you. This is not a family movie.

Different stories and fates mingling to a final conclusion. Much violence and death. It takes it's sweat time. Amusing and entertaining with some thrills and chills.

This movie, like Tarantino's latest venture, is for those of is who lived or grew up in the 60s. A time of discovery, of freedom, of empowerment. It was also the era of learning distrust, of parents, government, religion, all of which has led to present society. See the movie from that perspective, it will make sense.

A let down for sure. Too many characters, too much going on and way too long.
Good cast though.
