Excellent acting-especially by Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe. Supposedly based on a true story and there is an interview with the “real” subject of this film in the bonus section. My guess is that the portrayal of the “conversion therapy” is charitable. What a shame it is that this is still going on and that people are still being subjected to such nonsense. I wish these people would get a red-letter edition and tell me where and how many times in those red letters Christ says ANYTHING about homosexuality (or a couple of other of these “Christians’” favorite social issues) and, of course, they will find that number is “0”. They go back to the Old Testament for much of what they use to justify this stuff. However, my guess is that many of these same people who love the Old Testament for what it says about these issues will gladly eat their Easter ham.

Eye opening. A shocking film in that I find it hard to understand that, in this day and age, people still think that LGBTQ can be prayed away, or "cured". Within this film there is NO portrayal or introduction of strong, stable homosexual relationships, of which there are many in today's society. The toll conversion therapy takes on our children and especially those within religious communities is shocking, especially during a time when most young adults are having some difficulties figuring out adulthood and who they are. I loved the fine line drawn between the mother's and father's reactions and the support given to the son - this was a fine, subtle yet powerful look at divergent opinions within a strong marriage.

This mostly Australian cast did a good job portraying southern Baptists.

A film about religious groups that claim they can pray away gayness. The film seemed to lack the intensity that a young man would experience in the threats that everybody will reject him if he doesn't change to straightness. Also, the film didn't go into the profit motive of the institutions that house the therapy sessions.

ms_mustard beats me to the film's similarity to The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018) but with more depth on the fundamentalist Christian ex-gay conversion process than the sexuality part. Poor children having to suffer the social stigma and violence alone. Joel Edgerton (Red Sparrow (2018) male protagonist) screen writer, director and actor portrayed the chief therapist. (Thanks to the straight Australian stars - Edgerton, Crowe and Kidman in making this based on a true story and timely social drama.)

Postscript:
*L.I.A. was dismantled in 2012.
*Despite being discredited by the American Psychiatric Society, it is still legal in 45 states of America for parents to commit their children to conversion therapy.
*Practices of electric shock, solitary confinement, and various other forms of physical and psychological abuse have been reported.
*Sykes left L.I.A. in 2005. He is now openly gay and married to a man in Paris Texas, U.S.A.
*This film is dedicated to all the victims. Alive and dead.
*Leonard Cohen --- If it be your will. If there is a choice. Let the rivers fill. Let the hills rejoice.

This movie is a bit far fetched considering the big liberal Hollywood stand on gay rights. I liked the comment the kid makes though when he says "I keep coming back to dogs true design. Almighty dog." and " I feel like Job." Today someone like the Russell Crowe preacher is too Mike Pence, which is why Trump made him his Vice President. They should have put more humor in this movie. The conversion seems like it took place in a Muslim country.

It said it was based on real events but remember it was this boys life and should not apply to every life. I have known men that changed there mind later in life when they realized that they were sinning against God and wanted to change. I don't think you can do it without Christ.

Did this film even play in theaters? I don’t remember seeing any ads or promos, but having Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman in it I thought it would attract an audience. The film is a bit brutal and probably not for everyone. Russell plays a minister and Nicole his wife they send their son to a Christian conversion program when he tells his parents he thinks of men. I had a little problem trying to figure out the ‘program’ they send him to—he attends classes and can’t tell anyone about them, then he moves onto the campus and has to stay there without any family support. The program tries to Christianize moral behavior and remove any sinful thoughts and activities (including dependencies and alternative life/love styles.) The son is at a point trying to figure out his sexual identity while living with his family’s religious overtones when he gets enrolled in the program. His father is very stern and guided by other older ministers. His mother, while involved in the church as a minister’s wife, is also a more compassionate person loving her son regardless. I am not gay nor do I have gay children but I am sure all parents are concerned when their child is in any way different from the norm, most being protective and loving want to spare their children any discrimination or hate. Coming out to your family must be difficult, coming out in public, as well as coming out to yourself must be very difficult and challenging. Trying to eliminate the behavior through a conversion program seems a bit ludicrous in this day and age, but I guess some people want to believe it will work. I found the conversion therapy program rather brutal to watch because not only were the kids treated like asocial, antichristian misfits – they were barely treated as human beings (more like freaks according to God!) So, the DVD may not be for everyone but it is interesting. Based on the book by Garrad Conley.

following on the heels of last year's fictional The Miseducation of Cameron Post, this portrayal of Garrard Conley's memoir of his experience with conversion therapy is another horrendous example of the religious and psychological abuse of this therapy designed to 'erase the gay'.

watch the special features to meet Garrard and his parents.

Program leader speaks to new group, Part 1 of 4
Morning. Hi. Sinful, salacious, and extraneous materials. All reading material and films and television are off limits while inside the program. I am using sexual sin and homosexuality to fill a God-shaped void in my life. … But I am not broken, and God loves me. … Good. That is very true. Now somebody tell me what this is.
-A dollar.
A dollar. Now, no matter how much you crumple up a dollar bill, you can never take away its value. Now even if you were to rip it, which would represent our being severed from Christ, well, guess what? You can always tape it back together. Jesus puts us back together. And even though there is a scar, our value does not change. You are somebody. … You are worth something. … And that is a fact. …

Program leader speaks to new group, Part 2 of 4
Now, this may be the toughest, but most rewarding 12 days that many of you will ever face. But we have just one task, to bring ourselves back to God. To invite him back in. To understand how he truly meant to create us before all those pieces got torn away. Now, look, I know the road here wasn't easy for many of you. But I promise a smoother ride now that you're here. Because we are about to go on an amazing journey together. So, who's ready? That was a question. Who's ready? Say amen!
-Amen.
Amen! If you know you're worth a dollar, say amen!

Welcome to the Refuge program! Come on! That's right, great souls! Great! Now, I'm gonna tell you something that's gonna make you immediately feel a little better. People tell you… you can be born gay, that's not true. You cannot be born a homosexual, this is a lie. Now, I'm a counselor and a pastor, but was I born that way? No. It's behavioral. It's a choice. Cameron, you, you, uh, play football? Yeah?
- Yeah.
Were you born that way?
- No.
No. Now, you chose to be a football player, right? It's behavior. Now, if you... If Cameron stops playing football, he no longer is a football player. We gotta learn for ourselves where behavior comes from so we can cut it out and then we can no longer be labeled that way. Now, who can tell us what a genogram is?

Program leader speaks to new group, Part 4 of 4
Phillip. Well, a genogram is like a family tree... Mmm. ...only one that shows patterns of family behavior as well. Sort of like an illustrated one. Yes. Now, we are going to draw our family tree and we're gonna list next to these people their behavioral sin. So, they made us and they labeled us, so we're gonna label them. Michael, can you read the behavioral sins? We use the letters SSA or H to label same sex attraction or homosexuality, D for drugs, a dollar sign for gambling, A, alcoholism, P, promiscuity, M, mental illness, capital A, lowercase B for abortion, capital P, lowercase O for pornography, and C or G, criminal or gang affiliation. You're forgetting DV, domestic violence. Capital D, lowercase V,
