Surrealism with an emphasis on REAL. If you like Kurt Vonnegut, Andrew Smith, or Jacqueline Woodson, A.S. King will be your next author crush.

Remarkable. Powerful. This book is a force for change. As is her style, A.S. King begins with fragments from each character's perspective that at first glance, may seem fractured and nonsensical. However, each character has a distinct purpose that becomes realized as the story begins to come together towards the end of the novel. Tackling issues such as racism, white supremacy, domestic violence, poverty, greed and more A.S. King is still able to give the reader hope that change in our society is possible. I cannot recommend this book enough, and feel like I should read it again immediately for things I missed.

Brilliant. Funny. Disturbing. Smart. Honest. Important. Surprisingly hopeful. A.S. King's surrealistic novels are all genius. And so realistic it's easy to give in to the suspension of disbelief necessary to continue reading. I found myself rooting for these five cousins as if they are real people I know in real life because King's writing style is mesmerizing and true. It seems like every time I read an A.S. King novel I say it's the best one, but I mean it this time. Excellent pick for a book club discussion.
