This marvelous novel captures and psychology of its characters extremely well. Two Irish families of policemen in New York City endure mental illness, addiction, and tragedy, but they not only survive, they learn to thrive and love. Highly recommended. Kristi & Abby Tabby

Terrific book. I plan to read other novels by Marty Beth Keane. Time well spent.

Though I thought the ending was a little abrupt, the story kept me hooked all the way through.

This book was such an interesting examination of love (and the different ways we love and are loved), and the people and events that shape us (can we ever truly escape our past?). It is a character-driven portrayal of the warp and weft that weave together the history of two families and change the trajectory of their lives forever. It crosses the span of 40+ years, yet is written at the perfect pace to never feel rushed or clunky, and is written from the view point of many characters, so we get multiple points of view. I thought this was a fantastic novel that really resonates with you, and I found myself just wanting to process it for a bit once I was done before jumping into my next read.

Love is not enough. Nowhere near. So says more than one character in this story of two families through several decades. Mental illness, alcoholism, serious injury, serious illness, infidelity, abandonment, etc. The characters experience these and more through their lives but come out the other side "fine" (and I don't mean F.I.N.E.). Almost none of these characters take the easy way out and as a result are rewarded with the power of love, forgiveness and redemption.

This is very strong character driven fiction that focuses on two families and their lifelong relationships with each other. Great character development. Good choice for literary readers.

Sort of reminds me of Romeo and Juliet, with a few twists.

I’m not sure why the book got such great reviews though. I felt it rather lengthy to get to a satisfactory ending, with not a whole lot of bang. It was sort of a diary as life happens in our everyday world.
