Senator Merkley was one of the first members of Congress to try to visit the prisons on our southern border where migrant children and families are being held. His Facebook videos went viral.

Our government is deliberately abusing and traumatizing migrant children at our southern border, by separating them from their parents and holding them in prison camps with miserable conditions: children are cold, underfed, prevented from sleeping, and denied blankets, soap, and toothbrushes. This is being done for the stated purpose of “deterring” other migrants from leaving horrific conditions (including torture, rape and murder) in their home countries and coming to the US to ask for asylum. Please understand this: Our government is deliberately harming children (inflicting life-long psychological trauma on children) as a political policy.

This cruel and immoral policy is not a successful deterrent, but it is inflicting irreparable harm on thousands of children and their families. While the current administration calls migrants “animals” and dehumanizes them, these people are human beings (just like you and me!) who are fleeing terrible circumstances in their home countries. What would YOU do if you lived in a country where you or your precious children or grandchildren could be tortured, murdered and/or raped with impunity?

These actions by the US government violate US law and international law, as well as the laws of morality.

These actions are happening without Congressional oversight, because members of Congress and their staff are barred from visiting these “prisons.”

The people carrying out these heartless, cruel policies are lying to Congress, the press, and the American people about what they are doing. They are hiding these actions because they know Americans will be outraged by this policy to deliberately harm children.

Senator Merkley’s book describes his attempts to visit the prison camps holding children and families, and the violations of law that send migrant families and children into greater danger. For example, US law and international law require the US to admit migrants who approach “ports of entry” and request asylum. (Migrants are NOT breaking the law when they request asylum.) At present, our government is stopping migrants from entering the US at ports of entry, forcing them either to wait in Mexico (where they risk being attacked by gangs, as they have no family nearby to protect them) or to attempt to enter the US between ports of entry (where they risk death or injury from dangerous conditions or from “coyotes” who prey on vulnerable migrants). Either option is much more dangerous than being allowed to enter through a port of entry as the law requires. And our government is lying about this, saying migrant families can claim asylum at ports of entry, even as they stop people from entering.

Thousands of children have been separated from their parents at our southern border. Our government did not keep records of which children belonged to which parents. The people running the prisons lied to Senator Merkley about how the system worked. Because the parents were held by DHS and the children were held by the Office of Refugee Resettlement in DHHS, the completely different computer systems of the two separate agencies could not even communicate with each other, Our government made it as difficult as possible for families to find each other again. When ordered by a federal court to reunite the parents and children, our government was unable to reunite many families.
