A sweeping, delirious romance begins in the Polish countryside, where Wiktor, a musician on a state-sponsored mission to collect folk songs, discovers a captivating young singer named Zula. Over the next fifteen years, their turbulent relationship will play out in stolen moments between two worlds: the jazz clubs of decadent, bohemian Paris, to which he defects, and the corrupt, repressive Communist Bloc, where she remains, universes bridged by their passion for music and for each other.
"Pawlikowski remains a director to watch and Cold War is a film to watch again and again."--Toronto Star
"It's as verbally spare as it is visually spellbinding."--Chicago Tribune
"...a simple filmic jewel of a story, about a couple swimming hard against the currents of history and governments until they only have each other to cling to."--Boston Globe
"Pawlikowski shows us the beauty in an ugly time, and then he makes us wait and wonder if the characters will ever see it, too."--San Francisco Chronicle

Wiktor and Zula fall for each other during the founding of a performing arts school in Poland, the only thing that can keep them apart are the larger-than-life machinations of the world, as the Cold War drags on, they are pulled apart by circumstance and will have to make hard choices to be together. The story of Wiktor and Zula is up there with the likes of Casablanca's Rick and Ilsa in the history of film love stories. Amazing.
