Army Corps engineer and astronaut Roy McBride is searching for answers in the depths of space. Twenty years ago, Roy's father went in search of proof of the existence of extraterrestrial life on Neptune during a one-way mission. The mission was designated officially as a failure. Roy searches the solar system for the truth about both his father's mission and a recent mystery that has unfolded that threatens Earth. What Roy doesn't know is that this journey will do more than test him physically and mentally. The answers he finds will challenge everything he understands about the existence of humans.

The final twenty minutes, where detached astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt), gets closer with his long lost father and reclaims his life in the process, are what made the movie. The rest of the film felt a bit 'bleh', aside from the first ten minutes, which attempted to gibe a very rushed explanat... Read More »

I love a good space drama, and this thing is definitely drama over sci-fi, but I’m puzzled as to what this is supposed to be about. It’s essentially Daddy Issues in Space and despite the frustrating narration, we are never given enough information to care about anything that is happening. Ultimat... Read More »

Boy! Brad Pitt is looking so old and this morose film doesn't help. Tommy Lee Jones is good but he didn't have much to go on with the poor plot. Some of the actors, including Pitt sounded like they were reading a script, not acting it. Pretty boring, I walked away.

For those who reviewed this film as having no plot, they missed the lifts from Coppola's Apocalypse Now and Kubrick's 2001 Space Odyssey; man and technology run amok respectively. Other than the storyline thefts, the film is visually stunning and very well constructed. The space scenes were brilliant. An interesting watch.

A man emotionally crippled by his father's abandonment, seeking reunion, with fear and longing.
Brad Pitt gives an understated but strong performance.
Excellent and startling visuals and occasional gut-wrenching violence.

The human interactions of the characters are not reflective of highly intellectual people, as astronauts need to be, so not a very engaging story for me. Like a mile soap opera space movie. Hope the actors at least had fun filming the zero gravity scenes.

Watched this in the theater's and it was incredible! Visuals were a 5 star. Apparently, others who watched it at home weren't too big of fans. I thought it was fun. Loved Brad Pitt.

There is so little actual plot content in this waste of time that it would play better as a 15 minute animated cartoon. The visuals are mostly very well done, the physics is not consistent but can be ignored, Brad Pitt's character is boring after the opening scene and the only bit of 'life' in the whole thing is the small part played by Ruth Negga.
I'll blame the writer for this under-cooked turkey; there's only so much directing magic you can do in the absense of substance.

If you have 2 hours of your life you're willing to waste then you could do worse than this movie and there are some who might still find this enjoyable. I thought I'd be one of those but this was a 90 million production budget wasted on a poor script and even if I were a Brad Pitt fan I'd have been disappointed.

I'm a sucker for a good space movie. This was another good one thanks to the great acting of Brad Pitt (Roy Mcbride). Great special effects. One problem though. Mcbride goes off looking for his father and not expecting to find him. I don't know about you, but I often research who is in the films I want to watch. McBride's father is Tommy Lee Jones (H. Clifford McBride).
??? Spoiler Alert??? Mr. Jones is listed in the credits so of course McBride is going to find him otherwise Jones wouldn't be in the credits. But don't worry, Roy gets to go through hell for our entertainment.

24 quotes in IMDb; quite a few for a film with few dialogue. The two below is in IMDb already (thanks to the contributors):

I am active and engaged. I'm aware of my surroundings and those in my immediate sphere. I'm attentive. I'm focused on the essential... to the exclusion of all else. I'm unsure of the future... but I'm not concerned. I will rely on those closest to me. And I will share their burdens... as they share mine. I will live... and love.

He captured strange and distant worlds in greater detail than ever before. They were beautiful, magnificent... full of awe and wonder. But beneath their sublime surfaces... there was nothing. No love or hate. No light or dark. He could only see what was not there... and missed what was right in front of him.
