Myrtle Hardcastle is 12 going on 21. Her late mother was a medical student and her father is a prosecutor. Myrtle wants to be an investigator -- combining the gifts of both her parents into her future profession. What I loved about this book: 1) Peony, the cat, assistant to Myrtle 2) The excerpts from 'Principles of Detection' by H.M. Hardcastle at the beginning of each chapter. 3) The collaboration between Myrtle and the adults in her life -- especially her governess. It is a wonderful thing when a child is encouraged to pursue their unique gifts and not expected to conform. Myrtle is even able to win over a neighborhood mean girl. The book itself is on the long side for middle grade. I would recommend it for confident readers 11 & up. Finally, hurray for local authors! I did not realize until reading the acknowledgements that Bunce wrote this book just across the state line from me in Johnson County.

Irrepressibly curious Myrtle Hardcastle is a delightful protagonist, as interested in investigative science as she is in finding intrigue everywhere she looks, as good at stirring up trouble as she is as at getting to the bottom of mysteries--often at the same time. She is sure foul play is afoot when her elderly neighbor dies, even though everyone else is sure of natural causes, and sets out to convince them she is right. Bunce deftly weaves a twisty tale of Victorian England filled with interesting characters, most of all the wonderful Myrtle. Readers are sure to love it.

A sampling:

"Thus we were prepared to commit the most egregious transgression of which a Young Lady of Quality is capable. I was about to Go Outside Alone After Dark.

"Dear Reader, surely I need not enumerate the dangers posed by my present course of action; they are drilled into every girl from the cradle, by every possible means. I knew all about Spring-Heel'd Jack, the fiend who stalked the pages of the penny dreadfuls. Not to mention Jack the Ripper, the fiend who'd stalked the real-life streets of London only a few years ago. There were body snatchers and burkers; press-gangs waiting to drug the unsuspecting and ship them off to sea; and all manner of Deviants, ready to Defile the Innocent. I was not certain what this last meant, precisely, except that it was practically guaranteed to occur the instant the Young Lady of Quality touched her bootheel to the moonlit earth."
