"A tense, page-turning psychological drama about the making and breaking of a family, about a woman whose experience of motherhood is nothing at all what she hoped for--and everything she feared. Blythe Connor is determined that she will be the warm, comforting, supportive mother to her new baby Violet that she herself never had. But in the thick of motherhood's exhausting early days, Blythe becomes convinced that something is wrong with her daughter--Violet rejects her mother, screams uncontrollably, and becomes a disturbing, disruptive presence at her preschool. Or is it all in Blythe's head? Her husband, Fox, says she's imagining things. What he sees is an overwhelmed wife who can't cope with the day-to-day grind. The more Fox dismisses her fears, the more Blythe begins to question her own sanity, and the more we begin to question what Blythe is telling us about her life as well. Then their son Sam is born--and with him, Blythe has the natural, blissful connection she'd always imagined with her child. Even Violet seems to love her little brother. But when life as they know it is changed in an instant, the devastating fall-out forces Blythe to face the truth. Here, we see the making and breaking of a family in crystalline detail, and what it feels like when women are not believed. The Push is a tour de force you will read in a sitting, an utterly immersive pageturner that will challenge everything you think you know about motherhood, about our children, and about what happens behind the doors of even the most perfect-looking families. . 'The Push' is very pushy! It will make you push aside all the things you need to do until you finish reading this unputdownable book! As you read, pay attention to all the things being 'pushed'... This would be a great book club book.

A psychological drama about a first-time mother who doesn't feel a connection with her baby girl, Violet. When tragedy takes over the family after she has her baby boy, Sam, the family falls apart. Blythe and her husband separate, and Violet becomes the creepy child that you won't want to stop reading about. It's very fast-paced and easy to read. I would recommend it if you're tired of the same old psychological drama / domestic thriller stories.

A suspenseful psychological drama with elegical tone for a lost marriage and family. The background of the mother is smoothly incorporated.

“ A mother’s hear breaks a million ways in her lifetime.”
“ There are days, like that one, that mark the moments in our life that change who we are. Was I the woman being cheated on? We’re you the man who betrayed me? We were already the parents of a dead boy. Of a daughter I couldn’t love. We would become the couple that split. The husband who left. The wife who never got over any of it.”
It’s a heartbreaking novel that feels like a psychological triller, but it will be grabbing your attention like suspense. You will be pondering on many questions.... What is going on here? Is it untreated postpartum depression? Is it mothers not being capable of child loving? Is it multigenerational bad parenting? Or something even more sinister?
Ashley Audrain’s style of writing is flawless, engaging, heartbreaking and feels very personal.
Hype about this book is justified. Movie rights already bought.

So, this book is impossible to put down and deeply upsetting. I read it in one feverish sitting and am still not clear on how I feel about it. How's that for a not at all helpful review?!?! Don't listen to me. Check out the Goodreads reviews of this book. 4.19 stars with almost 40 000 ratings as of March 2021.

If you want a book that has zero cheerfulness in it, then this is your book. This storyline was so depressing. A husband and wife have 2 children, separate, deal with a disturbing daughter while all along have the mother’s dysfunctional backstory explained. I kept hoping that Blythe would have some cheerful break in her sorry life, but that just didn’t happen. I would rather read books with more levity.

Extraordinary, gripping and powerful!

I found this to be a tedious read with mundane writing and not very much meat in the plot. I am certain it has been a good talking point for people as to whether a bad seed can exist and how one cannot love their child. However I would not recommend this book to anyone.
