A beautiful, tender story about two boys from a conservative, God-fearing town discovering their attraction for one another and enduring the trials and tribulations that such a forbidden romance entails. Each boy has his own demons that weigh on their relationship, but the love they possess shines through, though it appears a bit dim at times. The prose is simple and sets a perfect tone. Although the events presented in this novel are far from unique, the author handled them with a master that kept them from feeling cliche. I loved Nathan's sweet, quiet yearning for Roy and Roy's tortured journey to acceptance, and while the ending was somewhat abrupt, I was left feeling happy and satisfied. This is a touching novel that will stay with you and something I highly recommend.

A story as powerful as this one pulls at your heart strings. There is realism portrayed in this novel between the two boys who share lives, and I believe it was this simple but realistic approach from the author that created a story that is not just pictured, but followed as if it was our own.

I loved the subtle romance that the two boys shared in the story. There is nothing better than sharing that emotional feeling with a character, that understanding that really hits home. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and till this day I turn back to it for extra comfort on a rainy day :-)

Rarely has a book affected me like this, and I've read a lot of books. It's amazing what Grimsley does with his stark minimalist prose, creating vivid characters whose actions and motivations always seem natural and believable, even within the shortness of the story. The love between the two boys is told with elegance and beauty. I couldn't stop thinking about the book after I finished. So much so that it kept me awake for most of the night, tossing and turning, haunted and rather depressed by the sadness of the story.
